Late Season Upland Hunt at Blue Horizon Quail Preserve

As you may know ROA is partnered with Blue Horizon Quail Preserve. They are family friends and offer a great Upland Bird hunting expierence in Randleman, NC.

A few months back I invited Don Rich and his son Tyler for a hunt. Tyler has Cerebral Pausy, but that hardly stops him form persuing his goals, which in this case was to get his first Quail and Pheasant in an Upland Hunt. Whic we did!

I met Tyler several years ago and developed a great friendship with him and his Father. Tyler is also an accomplished Kayak angler, there is a great piece on him in the Milk Crate.  Both Tyler and Don said that they wanted to do an Upland hunt, so I told them I had the perfect place. It would also be an excellent opportunity to see if we could adapt these hunts for folks like Tyler and even for Wounded Warriors.

My first thought was to let Tyler use his modified Segway, but the terrain and mud would make it tough. So I decided to try my Dad's Polaris fourwheeler. Its automatic so it would make a great hunting platform for Tyler.

Tyler adjusted to the four wheeler very quickly and we started positioning him so he could get the best shots. Everything seemed to fall into place, but the quail though differently. Everytime we think we had the setup, the quail would fly in the opposite directions. Eventually they would fly into ylers path an he would get his birds.

Our guide Chad and his dog Pete did a great job of getting Tyler set up for the shots. They are an excellent team!

This hunt went about as perfect as it could, Tyler did very well and bagged three Quail and two male Pheasant, mission Accomplished! We also know now that we can adapt our hunts for anyone who wants to hunt. We will plan on alot more hunts in 2016! IN all a very successful hunt, cannot wait to do it again next season!
